The appropriately named Villain Chair will make even the lowliest of office drones feel like they can take over the world and probably cause the CEO to cross that line between everyday villainy and cartoonish super-villainy. Hipster - Personal Trailer

When the backpack is a bit too grade-schoolish for your tastes and the shoulder bag just doesn’t haul enough gear for your liking you now have the option of pulling around your own personal trailer. Designed by Joel Hoag the Hipster was inspired by his father’s wish to walk across the United States and he hopes his personal trailer will launch a new sport of ‘adventure walking’ some day. It comes in two varieties at the moment, the Hipster I which uses a single wheel to keep the trailer light, maneuverable and compact and the Hipster II which uses two wheels making it stronger and capable of carrying heavier loads. LG Philips Flexible E-book: World’s Largest

LG Philips has announced their largest E-book. This 14.1-inch WXGA flexible E-book was announced at IMID 2006 (International Meeting on Information Display). It has been developed in partnership with E-ink, although crowned as the largest in this field; the E-book is practically feasible for relatively still images as 300 ms response time is slow and far from playing videos. In any case the E-paper is quite flexible and is easy to carry around as a daily newspaper. Regular LCDs definitely seem to be a passé in front of these.

Southwest Windpower’s Skystream 3.7: A $10,000 Wind Turbine to Energize Your Home

Southwest Windpower is launching Skystream 3.7 wind turbine next month that comes with features like economic power-generation, an ease of installation and portability. This is the right concept for energy conservation that saves an average of $500 to $800 expenditure on electricity. Jim Green (senior project manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s National Wind Technology Center in Golden, Colo) said: I think Skystream has a chance to break the 10 cent per kilowatt hour at the best sites. Comparable technologies that generate electricity from the wind or even the sun cost between 15 to 35 cents per kilowatt-hour. Usual Wind turbines need stabilizing wires to help it stand tall. In addition, it requests three electrical boxes to convert the produced energy into useable electricity. Whereas, Skystream needs no stabilizing wires. Built in electrical conversion machine measuring 35 feet long turbine requires to stand 20 feet higher than the tallest thing within a 500-foot radius. Nanosolar: Cost Effective Solar Films

Energy produced through solar gadgets is not only cost-effective but also environment conducive. Nanosolar is one such company which is based in California and uses an innovative technology to build a “solar film”. It is also on its track to produce solar electricity. The company prints CIGS (copper-indium-gallium-selenium) on a thin polymer using machines that look like printing presses. The procedure is very cost effective as the solar cell from Nanosolar would cost way too much less than standard silicon solar panel. The company is also starting shortly the volume production of its photovoltaic technology. They eventually plan to produce 430 megawatts of solar cells per year. Researchers Create Microwave Drill That Cuts Through Concrete Like Butter

We’d love to start this article by saying “Don’t expect to pick this up at your local Home Depot anytime soon”… but to be honest, this is exactly what it sounds like you’ll be able to do, whithin a few years. Eli Jerby and his colleagues at Tel Aviv University in Israel have developed a special drill that uses microwaves to make holes from 1mm to 1cm wide in concrete and glass simply by heating the materials past their melting point, (nearly 2,000 ºC) and pushing the drill bit through. The drill bit is a needle-like antenna that emits intense microwave radiation. The microwaves create a hot spot around the bit, melting or softening the material so that the bit can be pushed in. But the drill can’t bore through everything effectively. Sapphire’s melting point, for instance, is too high. And steel conducts heat too well for a hot spot to develop. But the device works fine on rocks and concrete. In fact, the heat may even strengthen holes’ walls in ceramics by welding together the fine grains in the material. Drilling by melting is nothing new, as it’s been done with lasers for some time. But this is cost prohibitive, while the new drill would cost hardly more than a regular drill. The only concern would be the worker’s safety, which will allegedly be assured via a simple metal shield in front of the bit.

The Snakefighter, aka “Snakes on a Firetruck”




While Snakes on a Plane not only sounds like a bad idea but also happens to be shaping up to be a box office flop, Snakes on a Firetruck is a different story altogether (it’s a bad pun, in case you’re not catching my drift). In 2003, some researchers at SINTEF began a project called “Snakefighter”, which sought to develop a self-propelled snakelike robot with the ability to shoot water. This would evidently allow it to extinguish some fires that would otherwise be too dangerous for human firefighters to get close to.
The ingenious aspect with this idea is that the energy the system needs in order to move is already available inside the fire hose, which contains water pressurized to 100 bar. The advantage of serpentine locomotion instead of wheel- or leg-based propulsion is greater flexibility and traversability.
SINTEF now has developed a prototype, which is 3m long and weighs 70 kg. The water hydraulic actuators give the robot enormous power. It moves like a biological snake and can raise its head above the ground to spray water. It is however at the moment only used as proof of concept, and there seems to be no concrete plans for commercialization.[Snake Firefighting Robot

Sony introduces LS1 PC/TV combo

Sony might be on to something with the new LS1, which is essentially a PC-TV combo. The LS1 sports a 19" LCD display and is powered by an Intel Core Duo processor. The operating system of choice would be the Windows XP Media Center Edition. Other specifications include 2GB of RAM that is vital for entertainment PCs, a 250GB hard drive, built-in WiFi connectivity, an integrated webcam, and an analogue TV tuner. The 19" display supports a native resolution of 1680 x 1050. Last but not least, the inclusion of a DVD writer makes the LS1 an attractive PC/TV proposition. It will be available in mid-September for $2,100.

How-To: Make Your Own Network Wire

Let us take a few tricks from WillO’Brien on how to run network wiring. We just need easily available wire strippers, RJ-45 connectors, RJ-45 crimping tool and category 5 cable. Sheath off the wires and slide them into the plug until the far end of the connector is touched. Insert the connector and wire into your crimping tool. Perform the same process for opposite end, and you will get your own network cable.

ویولون خودکار

The DeLighTable

At first glance, the DeLighTable from Thomas Gardner may seem like some high tech toy, using OLEDs, and touch sensitive screens or whatnot. But it isn’t. The table, which allows you to create nifty visual effects by simply touching it, uses a rather simple, but elegantly implemented technique. An opaque liquid is sandwiched between a transparent plastic film and a light source. When touched, the liquid moves away and lets the light shine through. And just like that, you’ve got a very cool coffee table that will only have set you back £1200.

SkyScout

Telescopes with the ability to automatically adjust their position to point towards a particular star or constellation are nothing new but typically setups with that functionality are not that portable. This is where the SkyScout comes in. Wherever you are just point the handheld device at any celestial object in the sky and with the click of a button the SkyScout will identify it and provide a comprehensive text and audio description about the object including its history, mythology and other info. While the optics in the SkyScout are definitely no replacement for a full-size telescope I think its size and functionality make it a useful tool for any astronomer. تلویزیون شفاف سونی

سونی ادعا کرده که اولین تلویزیون شفاف را ساخته, همان چیزی که اپل هم در حال طراحی و ساخت آن است.

البته اگر به تصویر نگاه کنید یک پروژکتور در پشت گذاشنه شده پس نمیتواند تلویزیون شفاف باشد. البته همین ایده هم ارزش دارد و مطمینا در آینده نه چندان دور تلویریون شفاف هم ساخته میشود.

HOWTO: Make a Zedomax Alarm System 3 Minutes

Wanna make an alarm! Especially, when your dog sleeps with you, then to avoid wayward intruding dogs here is an alarm system. What you need to get are, Magnetic Contact Switch (used as door sensors), 12VDC Piezzo Buzzer and 2N3904 Transistor. Comfile’s CB280 embedded computer module and a 4×4 keypad, keypad controller, and CUBLOC will do the job. These are easily available at any electronic hub within a few bucks. This is so sophisticated that you can feed the password and with the press of “CNCL” button, can sweep it. Apple’s Three New Patents Uncovered

The US Patent & Trademark Office has published Apple’s three patents related to:
1. managing internet transactions
2. managing as well as penetrating metadata, and
3. a third for a display actuator.
The first patent is an object-oriented move to expand and run internet transactions, it can erect active queries for data, based on either user input or data store within an external database.
Second patent describes the process for filing data in a data processing system and systems for managing data. This is a system for managing data, such as metadata, which can be created by various software applications.
Apple’s filing centered on the reduction of complexity, cost savings, and offer sleek interface to users along with maximizing the area for visual output with the help of display actuators. Apple’s filing is capable of accessing the stored data. A single search interface is capable to search all of the metadata for all of the different files created by the different software applications; also, it can search for indexed or non-indexed content from the actual data files.

Muvia portable media player

NHC of Japan will be unveiling its new portable multimedia player next week. Dubbed the Muvia, this device ships with a lovely 2.5" LCD display and features support for the most popular audio and video formats, including MPEG, MOV, AVI, ASF, Divx, WMV, MP3, WMA, and WAV. The Muvia plays back video in 320 x 240 resolution at 30fps, and is compatible with both NTSC and PAL systems. The major drawbacks would be the limited 512MB memory and an archaic USB 1.1 connection that comes with each unit. The Muvio retails for 220 Euros.

Stethoscopes have more than one purpose

We often think that the only purpose of the stethoscope is for the physician to listen to our beating hearts. What we don't know is, doctors aren't boring people and have a sense of adventure with their equipment just like how we like to trick out our vehicles with bling rims and LCD display headlights. In the event where a patient arrives at the emergency department without a hearing aid, the physician can speak into the stethoscope's diaphragm piece while the patient listens on the other end, and vice versa for a makeshift hearing aid. There are other uses for the boring looking stethoscope such as a reflex hammer, but that's another story for another day.

450Km Per Charge

Fashion house, Maison de Courrèges’s André and Coqueline Courrèges have embellished their electric vehicle line with the latest ‘Zooop’ that takes you 450 km per charge. The three-seater 690 kg car runs on powerful Lithium Polymer batteries (70 A/hour 370 V) that don’t let you down by generating 150 kW of power and still maintaining their cool, and charging and recharging fast. The Zooop can reach speeds of 180 km/h, which is too good and apparently gives relief to the depleting crude oil resources. It’s sad we’ve been designing cars to whet our undying appetite for speed and thrill, completely neglecting what and how much nature has in the offing. I think these types of designs should have emerged at least a decade before, however, automobile manufactures, who have in fact lost their focus, can bounce back with more creative and practical concepts like the Zooop, which ironically is unleashed by a fashion house, and help getting back the lost sheen of this beautiful planet.

Segway Two New Models: The i2 And x2

Segway, everyone’s favorite overpriced personal transporter from the future, has announced two new models: the x2 and i2. There’s a bunch of new features, perhaps the most notable of which is the introduction of LeanSteer™ technology, which allows you to turn right or left by leaning in that direction, in the same fashion that forward/backward control is currently achieved. Current models rely on a handlebar control to turn. Presumably this would make the transporters even easier to maneuver. Ladies, be careful what you wish for. And if you happen to be Jon Patrick’s better half, you have to be extra careful. See, Jon Patrick is the man who became “Blogfamous” for building a street-legal, jet-engine powered Wolkswagen Beetle. So, when his lady told him she’d like for her scooter to go a little faster than 40mph, his obvious solution was to strap two JFS 100 jet engines he seemed to have lying around.Engines are 50 lbm each so weight is an issue. Will probably use air-start with a carbon fiber tank of compressed air. That saves weight since batteries will then not be needed.Looks cool from the top. Man Uses A Nokia Mobile As Wireless Optical Mouse

A while back, we posted about the Loginoki, a mouse that someone had Frankensteined an LCD into. Well, it seems that the Loginoki inspired someone else to ditch the mouse altogether, and use a Nokia 6230i as the mouse itself. Using the phone’s camera and Bluetooth connection, the man wrote some Java code that enables you to use the mobile as a wireless mouse.Right now, it’s only working on his mobile, and the code has not been released. Sony introduces Mylo, a new media device

This little (well, not iPod Nano little) gadget packs some nice features and definitely seems like a step in the right direction for Sony, much better than their old Vaio media device. The media player does MPEG-4, digital audio, and pictures. But it also has a WiFi connection and a QWERTY keyboard, for chatting on Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger (No AIM support, sorry.) Wait, wait, wait! It also works as a wireless Skype phone! And it has an Opera browser. And it can wirelessly stream music to other mylo owners in the area, ala iTunes. Without cellular connectivity, its not going to best a Hiptop, but we love the open standard support. Full Stats and a video review after the jump. The mylo has 1GB of flash memory, backed by a Memory Stick Pro Duo slot. Its screen is a 320 by 240 pixel 2.4-inch LCD. It'll retail for $350 when it hits the shelves in September.

Socket Salvation: E-Rope

If you are as sick as I am, trying to fix those bulky ass AC adapters into those power strips with one or the other socket trying to nudge the other one out, you are going to be glad to know that Chul Min Kang and Sung Hun Lim have gone back to the basics.It has been a while since anyone tried to tamper with the power-sucking, socket overcrowding conventional power strips, which is the reason for my ecstasy on hearing about the E-rope. This IDEA award-winning concept is basically about a modular power strip which can be twisted and turned at will to accommodate those Godzilla sockets. Even Vampire power (power consumed by appliances in standby mode) can be slain by the E-Rope by simply twisting them 90°.E-Rope, as the name suggests can be a rope with a dozen or more power strips joined, shining their trippy blue light all along. It has still to find a manufacturer, which I am sure is not going to be a tough job.

You may already know that Local Business Ads allow you to create an enhanced text ad with photos and icons that will give you greater visibility when potential customers search for your business on Google Maps (see screenshot below). In addition, we'll even show a regular text version of your local business ad when users in your area are searching for your business on Google.com.
To enhance local business ads, we've recently introduced the ability to use your own icon as the marker on the Google Map. The icon is 16 pixels by 16 pixels and is similar to a favicon that you see in your favorite web browser. (We've highlighted the custom map marker icons in red in the screenshot below

همه چیز در حال رشد و حرکت است. انرژی هم از یک شکل به شکل دیگر تبدیل میشود. محققان در ژاپن موفق به تولید برق از گیتهای مترو شدند بدین صورت که هر فردی که رد میشود یک دسته را به حرکت در میآورد و به این شکل انرژی بوجود میاید شاید مقدار زیادی انرژی بوجود نیاید ولی ایشتگاهی با هزاران مسافر در روز!!! همچنین ایده هایی مثل تولید انرژی از عقربه های ساعت با کار گذاشتن چرخ زیر آنها.

True 3D Display

Any sort of technology that uses precisely aligned, intersecting infrared lasers to create small amounts of plasma tends to worry us a little, seeing as plasma is, well, quite hot. That hasn’t stopped the folks at Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) from developing a true 3D display using this very technique. The device, on display at SIGGRAPH 2006, is able to produce up to 100 dots per second, which in turn are used to create a true, three dimensional image.

Certainly, at this point the technology is in its infancy, and the images created are primitive. But if anyone remembers monochrome monitors, they’ll understand the potential here. For a video demonstration, come right in.

PrinterAnywhere یک برنامه ساده و بسیار کارا که به شما اجازه پرینت گرفت از تمام پرینترها را میدهد. تنها نیازش اینه که اون یکی پرینتر هم به اینترنت وصل باشه. با این برنامه دیگر نیازی به داشتن اطلاعات شبکه, تنظیماتش ندارید. این برنامه قبل از اینکه یک برنامه باشه نتیجه یک فکر خوب است. و در مقایسه با فکس که کیفیت را تحلیل میدهد و قیمتشم قابل مقایسه نیست و نیاز به کاغذ را از بین مبیرد و همچنین زمانی که میخواید یک کپی از نامه را برای جلوگیری از تغییرات احتمالی برای کسی بفرستید. و مهمتر از همه اینکه مجانیه و هیچگونه پسوورد یا کرک هم نیاز نداره

CD آسيب ديده را خودمان تعمير كنيم

جنس ديسك‌ها از نوعي پلاستيك است. ديسك‌هاي فشرده مانند فلاپي‌ها به لوازم و سطوح مغناطيسي حساس نيستند به طوري كه فلاپي‌ها با يك خراش جزئي اطلاعاتشان از دست مي‌رود، اما اطلاعات روي CDها را تا حدي مي‌توان حفظ كرد.

CDها از نظر فيزيكي براساس قوانين نور كار مي‌كنند، CDدرايوها اما ساختاري براساس سيستم ليزر دارند كه مي‌توانند اطلاعات را خوانده و اطلاعات زماني كه ليزر روي CD متمركز مي‌شود و پرتو به يك نقطه برخورد مي‌كند براساس كد 0 يا 1 تعريف و ذخيره كنند. اين نقاط به شكل منطقي بر روي CD ذخيره نشده‌اند. به طور كلي ذرات غبار و يا اثر انگشت خودمان شايع‌ترين اثرات روي CD است كه مانع راه ليزر مي‌شود، جالب اينكه اثر انگشت به تنهايي اين مشكل را به وجود نمي‌آورد، بلكه روغن طبيعي پوست، به سطح CD مي‌چسبد. به اين ترتيب با طرحي از اثر انگشتمان ليزر در جهتي كه با فقدان اطلاعات مواجه است، هدايت شده و در اين حالت CD عمل نمي‌كند.
در بيشتر موارد عمل نكردن CD به دلايل فوق همچون ذرات غبار بيشتر بر سطح CD و يا اثر انگشت خودمان است كه به راحتي با آب ساده و يا كمي مايع دستشويي مي‌توانيد سطح CD را تميز كنيد و البته لزومي ندارد CDها را در ماشين لباسشويي و يا ظرف‌شويي بشوييم!
تمام كاري كه بايد انجام دهيد اين است كه سطح CD را با يك تكه پارچه مرطوب (كه پرز ندهد) پاك كرده و بعد از اينكه از خشك شدن كامل آن اطمينان حاصل كرديد، دوباره آن را در دستگاه بگذاريد. احتمالا راجع به پاك‌كنندگي شوينده‌هايي از قبيل خميردندان و يا واكس بي‌رنگ و يا... بر روي CD شنيده‌ايد ولي لازم است بدانيد كه هيچ كدام تاثير مناسبي ندارند و بهترين روش براي پاك كردن CDها همان استفاده از وسايل پاك‌كننده مخصوص است. علاوه بر اينها DVDها هم براساس همان قوانين CDها كار مي‌كنند و نسبت به غبار و يا اثر انگشت حساس‌تر هستند و براي تميز كردن مي‌توان از روش‌هاي فوق استفاده كرد البته با حوصله و دقت بيشتر.

Ajax Timeline

Mozy - Free Remote Backup Tool

Mozy is a remote backup tool for Windows that gives you 2GB space to automatically synchronize your folders online. Mozy encrypts data with 448-bit Blowfish encryption, and transfers them using 128-bit SSL, so it's secure. You can schedule daily or weekly backups or you can let the automatic backup happen (Mozy backups your folders only if the computer is idle for a certain number of minutes, by default - 30 minutes).
If you don't have NTFS as a file system, Mozy can't perform backup for opened files, so you might consider closing all the applications while Mozy backups the files.
My only complaint is about restoring files: you can select the files you want to restore online, but the interface is pretty stiff. You're limited to 5 restores a month and you get the restored files by email. It would be nice if you could manage restoring files using the same local client.

Is Blogger Neglected?

I came across a news from last year that explained Blogger's plans for the future:
"Google is also considering the creation of an enterprise Blogger version, as well as letting users limit access to their blogs by creating private groups, said Biz Stone, Blogger senior specialist.
Although Blogger currently allows users to post text and photos to their blogs via any e-mail program, Google is looking into a tighter integration with Gmail, Stone said.
Although users can password protect their Blogger blogs with third-party software or services, Blogger currently doesn't offer native ways for users to limit access to their blogs. However, Google is mulling over the possibility of adding some native privacy features, such as the ability for users to create private groups and that way control who can view their blogs, Stone said."
Blogger's development seems to have slowed down since it was acquired by Google, and many of the features found in other popular blog platforms (like categories, inline comments, plugins) are not available in Blogger. There are also frequent problems with accessing the site. I wonder what was the real reason for acquiring Blogger: the team or the fact that Blogger is a publishing platform well-suited for AdSense?
